I’ve been thinking, with all of us always pushing for the value of discipleship in our churches, shouldn’t we also take a good honest look at, not only how Jesus discipled his 12, but also what the 12 looked like…
It’s simply fact that not all the people Jesus encountered followed him and amongst those who did not all were equally discipled by him and one even fell away! So what can you and I learn from not only how Jesus discipled his followers but also from those he discipled.
That is what this next few week’s will be about…
No. 1
The kind of person Jesus can disciple has to be a follower…
The guys who ended up following Jesus left everything they were busy with behind and went after Him! What would this mean for us today? Well here’s my thought’s… Obviously we all can’t just stop working or stop studying and just go to a church and say: “Here I am I want to follow Jesus… please show me where he is so I can go to him and walk after him wherever he is going to next!” So following, for us, must look a bit different…
Following Jesus starts with a decision to make Jesus Lord! 1Pet3:15 – But in your hearts, set apart Christ as Lord. This is a decision to rely on the bible, God’s Word, to form your opinions, convictions and thoughts. Lord means master the one who calls the shots, it means leader implying that we follow, it means owner leaving us with no right to form or function from our own opinions or desires.
Following then filters through everything we do…like how we drive and how we talk to and of others. It causes us to think talk and do as Jesus would. Following reminds us that we are not Jesus but that we are followers of Jesus. It helps us understand that He knows best and that if He said it, I can believe it!
So often I get CHRISTIANS who think that they know better that God! You are guilty of this when you think you don’t have to do things the way the bible leads. I really wouldn’t want to put myself in that position. That’s pride and God hates pride! God helps people who are humble, why, because humility will cause you to follow, it will cause you to know that he always knows best!
This is a true saying: “If Jesus couldn’t disciple a person that didn’t want to follow him, I certainly won’t be able to”
So in your faith journey with God, make sure you have decided to follow him. That will make it so much easier for your leaders to disciple you!
